Outreach: Popo Puppeteers
It really all started with Popo Puppeteers! In 1970, Bonnie Orgren approached me (Monica) at an art fair where I was selling puppets and asked if I’d help her direct a kid’s puppet troupe at the Iowa City Library. For several years (first with Bonnie; then with Deanne Wortman; then with Teri Jean), our young troupe made puppets, rehearsed, and performed at the old Carnegie Library as often as once a month. We adapted fairy tales and children’s books, sometimes with political overtones (I’ll never forget the group that made the Wizard of Od puppet look suspiciously like Richard Nixon!).
